I think it's the single old-fashioned 'tragedy' is Tolkien' oeuvre, although its arguable that the whole of the saga/mythology is in fact a tragedy in itself, since it is of course the tale of (why) Arda (is) marred.

I haven't read Children of Hurin, only the Silmarillion. But the story of Túrin and Nienor is my favourite of the whole book.
